Dr Pierre Viviers is one of our Medical Council Members and a SASMA accredited Sports Physician and currently holds the position of Senior Director at Stellenbosch University. He is managing the health services to staff and students of Stellenbosch University. He is a Research Associate of the Faculty of Science, in the Centre for Human Performance Sciences. He completed a B.Med.Sc; Hons.B.Med.Sc, M.Med.Sc and M.B.Ch.B at the University of the Free State and hold an M.Sc Sports Medicine degree from University of Pretoria. He completed a post-graduate certificate at Witwatersrand University Business School in Higher Education Leadership and Management. Before joining Stellenbosch University he was in private practice actively practising sport and exercise medicine. He is currently a member of the Medical and Scientific Committee of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) as well as the SARU Concussion Discussion Group. Dr Viviers is a member of various overarching Institutional committees including the SU Staff Wellness Committee and Student Support Committee. He is an active member of SASMA (also served on the Western Cape Executive) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and presented over the years at both bi-annual and annual meetings of these entities. As rugby team physician he served in senior provincial, various national and international teams. He acted as medical director for various national rugby tournaments and served in the same position during the IRB U/20 World Championship 2012, which was held in South Africa. Dr Viviers is also an invitational lecturer for the Master`s course in Sports Medicine at the Free State University and act in the same capacity at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee before.
Leon Lategan is one of our Medical Council Members and a registered biokineticist who studied at the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Pretoria. He spent nearly 10 years working for the then SA Medical Services and has been working as a lecturer in the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Sport and Movement Studies for the last 15 years. He specialises in sports injury rehabilitation, isokinetics, health promotion and sport sciences and has published 17 peer-reviewed journal articles. Leon is a reviewer for two SA scientific journals and has acted as external examiner for more than 7 universities up to PhD level. Leon is a member of several local and international associations for example: the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA), the Biokinetics Association of South Africa (BASA) and the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS). He represented the SANDF in tennis between 1990 and 1998 and won the men’s doubles tournament four times. He enjoys all sport and currently plays social golf and is a passionate fly fisher. Leon is a founding member of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Sport Research (CISAR) within the University of Johannesburg that include several professions, e.g. optometrists, sport psychologists, exercise physiologists, coaches and sport managers. Leon has a passion for wellness and health promotion and has designed and managed several initiatives in this field, e.g. “Healthy Hearts Project”, several fitness challenges and wellness days in the public and private sectors
Tony Payne is a husband, and a father of two children, cyclist and Ironman tri-athlete and has worked in the Fitness and Wellness industry for over 26 Years. Originally growing up in a family that owned gyms he then went into the development, manufacture, importation and sales of fitness and medical equipment. Tony has a degree in Physical Education from Wits University with an honors in Sport Science. Tony is one of the founding directors and owners of PentaSystems(Pty)Ltd, the exclusive distributors of Technogym and Wattbike in Southern Africa. Over 23 years PentaSystems with the Technogym Brand have grown to be the leader in the Fitness and Wellness Industry and have more than 5000 clients with an installed base of over 2.5 billion rand. PentaSystems employs over 120 full time staff and offers solutions including equipment sales and servicing, corporate wellness operations consulting, clinical wellness intervention services and financial services to the fitness and wellness markets. Tony is widely regarded as a thought leader by the Fitness & Wellness community. He is well travelled and attends a large number of international conventions and conferences on wellness and health and has been a speaker at multiple conferences both locally and internationally. Tony is currently also a strategic council member of Exercise is Medicine South Africa and sits on the global steering committee at Technogym in Italy for development for the digital era.
Wayne Derman is one of our Medical Council Members and a Professor of Sports and Exercise Medicine at the UCT Sport Science Institute of South Africa and is Co-Director of the Sports Medicine Services and Research Group, incorporating the FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence and IOC Research Centre for Injury Prevention and Health of the Athlete at the Institute. He is Director of U-Turn, the Chronic Disease of Lifestyle Intervention Programme at the Institute and has participated as consultant on the WHO committee on secondary prevention of stroke and cardiovascular disease in developing countries, and the Oxford Health Alliance. Professor Derman has played an important role in clinical support for South Africa’s athletes at International level. He fulfilled the positions of Chief Medical Officer for the South African Team to the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 Olympic Games, and Medical Officer for the South African Paralympic Team to Beijing in 2008 and Chief Medical Officer for London 2012. In December to May 2002, he served as Flight Surgeon to Cosmonaught Mark Shuttleworth during the “First African in Space” mission in Russia; and served as the Medical Officer for Cape Town for the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Having diverse interests, he has been awarded many accolades in his career ranging from a Fellowship of the American College of Sports Medicine; the Val Schreire Award for the Outstanding Investigator in the Cardiovascular Field in Southern Africa; the Paul Harris award from Rotary International for community contribution; to a Mondi Award nomination for journalism. In December 2004, Professor Derman was named recipient of the Department of Health and Health Professionals Council award for Excellence in Health Care in South Africa.
Dr Janse van Rensburg is one of our Medical Council Members and has completed her MD under the title “The effect of exercise training on the autonomic function, disease activity and functional capacity in females suffering from rheumatoid arthritis” at the University of Pretoria. She has also obtained her MMed (PhysMed) (Cum Laude), MSc Sports Medicine, and MBChB (Cum Laude). She was appointed as Senior Lecturer and following that, Head of the Section Sports Medicine in 1999. She heads a Sports Medicine Practice at the University of Pretoria and runs a Rheumatology practice in her private capacity. Dr Janse Van Rensburg has for a prolonged period been involved in research projects and clinical trials, and has authored and co-authored articles with an emphasis on rheumatological conditions and also issues relating to sports injuries. She has accompanied many sports teams as sports physician, both nationally and internationally, including the SA Olympic Team to Athens. She was also the Venue Medical Officer at Loftus for the FIFA Confederations Cup as well as the World Cup. In 2012 she co-launched the Fitness Friday project on the campus of the University of Pretoria. She is an avid sports person who has represented South Africa in netball on several occasions. She has also participated in the Comrades Marathon and has completed several Argus Cycle races
Preethi Mistri is one of our Medical Council Members and holds an honour’s degree in Nutrition & Dietetics from UCT, a Physical Education degree from University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) and a business certificate course (MAP) from WITS Business School. After practising clinical dietetics in public service institutions, she joined the corporate world and has held several roles over the years including Consumer Communications, Medical & Scientific Affairs, Health, Claims & Regulations and the latest being Nutrition & Wellness Manager for various multinational organisations: Nestle, Eli Lilly, Danone SA and Coca-Cola SA. Preethi works on the Communications and PR portfolio for ADSA GS.
Dr Georgia Torres has completed her PhD in Exercise Physiology, specifically in the area of Metabolic Syndrome and Exercise Programming, at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. In 2000 Georgia also qualified as a Conditioning and Strength Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association of America (NSCA). Georgia has co-written the Hockey Conditioning and Endurance training manual for The International institute of Fitness (Pretoria University)- In addition, Georgia has also worked as a personal trainer for 20 years and was the conditioning specialist for the South African Women’s Olympic Hockey Team 2004 and for the U21 National hockey team, 2012. Currently, Georgia is the Regional manager and Professional liaisons officer for the Exercise is Medicine, South African branch and working in the Wellness Services Department for Penta Medical Systems. She co-ordinates the scientific and training process of this department.
