Fellowship

The SASMA Fellowship is to recognise significant contribution to the field of sport and exercise medicine and science in South Africa and globally through knowledge production, teaching/training/mentorship, and social responsiveness. 

Become a SASMA Fellow

Application Process:

  1. Motivation Letter (not more than 1-page)
  2. Short CV (3-4 pages)
  3. Current Member and history of 3 year membership (consecutive membership is not required)
  4. Participation in biennial congress (two out of the last five)
  5. Evidence of service to, and promotion of SASMA (e.g., promote membership, promote congress attendance, contribution to congress programme, reviewing)
  6. Social Responsiveness – demonstrate contribution to public service and engagement. This could be in the form of clinical practice in communities, contribution to policy and national governing bodies, and/or translation and dissemination of sport and exercise medicine and science.
  7. Evidence of one or combination of the following:

Knowledge production:

  • 3 publications as either first, main or 2nd author. Or,
  • 5 publications as a co-author on a research team.
  • Presentations at national and/or international conferences

Teaching/training/mentorship:

  • Teaching of medical, allied health or science students, at any level.
  • Training and supervision of clinicians and/or scientists.
  • Upon an acceptance into the Fellowship, Fellows will have to pay a 2 year membership fee of R 2800 (which includes a 2 year SASMA membership). Fellows who have not paid their membership fees for 1 cycle will lose their Fellow status.

Become a SASMA Fellow

Application Process:

The SASMA Future Fellow Programme is to build the next generation of sport and exercise medicine and science leaders in Africa.

Based on the applicant’s goals, Future Fellows will gain access to the network of SASMA Fellows to build their career and become a full Fellow within 2-3 years.

SASMA Future Fellows will gain guidance and mentorship in the areas of knowledge production (i.e. publish), opportunities to train and teach, and social responsiveness.

Application Process:

  1. Motivation Letter (not more than 2-pages)
  2. Short CV (3-4 pages)
  3. Current student or full member
  4. Support letter from one current SASMA fellow

Upon acceptance into the programme, Future Fellows will have to pay a 2 year membership fee of R 1400 (which includes SASMA membership). Renewal will be required if the Future Fellow is unable to apply for a Full Fellowship in the next cycle.
