SASMA Biennial Congress
Was held from 18 – 20 October 2011
Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg
The 14th Biennial TransAct SASMA Congress has gained considerable momentum since the release of the First Announcement. We will now be hosting 11 international speakers covering almost every field in sports medicine and science. Whether you are a sports physician, orthopaedist, physiologist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, biokineticist, podiatrist or dietician there will be high quality presentations relevant to your field.
The full international faculty is listed elsewhere in this Announcement but I would like to highlight the addition of Dr Craig Ranson from the UK who will headline the cricket and back injury seminar. Craig is on the ICC Medical Panel and will share his considerable clinical and research expertise.
Many of the usual local suspects will also be presenting (Noakes, Schwellnus, Collins, Constantinou, Derman, Holtzhausen, Janse Van Rensburg, Kolbe-Alexander et al) but a particular emphasis will be on new presenters who represent pockets of excellence in South African sports medicine. Hear Thami Mweli on spinal injection techniques, Bev Roos on Achilles ultrasound and see “Chuck” Cakic perform hip arthroscopy. You are encouraged to attend the early morning breakfast seminars to engage experts such as Ponky Firer and make up your own mind about the role of Thermography.
Ethics CPD points are always much sought after and a thought-provoking session is included that includes Rory Steyn, former bodyguard of President Nelson Mandela who will teach us lessons learnt from Madiba. Trevor Dale, a former BApilot, will draw analogies between flying and medical care.
There’s fun to be had too and a host of entertainers will help us make up the social programme.
Only one thing remains to complete the congress – the submission of your free communications. Let’s show off the best of novel South African research and clinical work; whether you are an under or post-graduate, scientist or clinician, this is your opportunity to present your efforts in international company. Both oral and poster presentations will be accepted and, as a new innovation, posters will be presented electronically.
Take advantage of the discounts for SASMA members and early birds – register now. If the programme is not a big enough draw card, SASMA, the ACSM, San Francisco Travel and TransAct have joined efforts to give SASMA members the opportunity of winning a trip to the 2012 ACSM meeting in San Francisco.!
