The Clinical Sports and Exercise Medicine Research Group of the UCT/MRC Exercise Science and Sports Medicine Research Unit (ESSM) is once again proud to announce the hosting of the 4th Clinical Sports Medicine Conference from Wednesday 13 October to Friday 15 October 2010 in Cape Town. This will be the fourth biennial Clinical Sports Medicine Conference, and follows the highly successful conferences that were held in 2004, 2006 and 2008 respectively. This conference will be hosted in conjunction with the following partners and organisations:

•  International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Research Centres
•  International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS)
•  South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA)
•  Biokinetics Association of South Africa (BASA)
•  Sports Interest Group of the South African Society of Physiotherapy

The focus of the Conference will be “Injury Prevention and Protection of the Health of the Athlete” with a specific emphasis on prevention (primary and secondary) of injuries, and preventing illness in athletes. The programme will also include current trends and recent updates in sports genetics, applied exercise physiology, sports nutrition, and psychological care of athletes.

This conference will be characterised by the largest contingent of International speakers (see the list of confirmed speakers below). In particular, representatives from the recently announced International Olympic Committee (IOC) Research Centres will join us as keynote speakers at this meeting. These clinicians and scientists were recognised by the IOC as leaders in the field of Injury prevention and protection of the health of the athlete.

Over the 3-day period, these well-known international experts will join local experts in keynote sessions, symposia, and free communications. There will also be opportunity for practical demonstration of techniques, as well as hands-on clinical workshops to familiarize delegates with clinical techniques. As indicated, free communication sessions will be included in the programme, where delegates will be able to present their clinical and research experiences in Clinical Sports Medicine.

The conference will also include an exhibition area where members of the industry will be able to familiarise delegates with equipment and products that can improve the medical care and scientific support to their patients and athletes.

This conference will be of particular value to all clinicians (doctors, physiotherapists, biokineticists, applied physiologists and dieticians) and also who are involved, or would like to develop a preventative approach in the clinical care for their patients.

Finally, this conference will be CPD accredited, and we will be applying for a minimum of 24 CPD points.
